Why don't we concentrate on state chapters.. that surely makes some big difference. We were able to apply for I-140 and I-485 thats a huge blessing. But do we have enough time to motivate our EB friends to join us and meet the law makers, signing letters etc... If we have many active members we would have achieved something.

The call campaign is still on. We need the congressman's support.
We need calls especially from members in the congressman's district in Texas.
We cannot stop until all EB immigrants are helped. EB3 is badly backlogged , and we shouldn't start celebrating yet for EB2 China and India yet from a single VB.
Please call. Especially from Texas.

I did a one time $100 contribution during 2007 Fiasco as i know it was all because of IV. I stayed away from Donating to IV after Donor - Non Donor fights.
I know IV is doing wonderful job and i want to chip in here....Before that i want to know if this is separate drive or can i get Donor status?
Thanks

Swamy - You have posted a truly brilliant quote my friend. My contributions to Immigrationvoice will begin shortly. Good luck to us all and God bless.
I did sometime back.
Given thanksgiving is barely a week away, we can be certain of the usual platitudes directed at immigrants - this is a good time to remind the average American how far they have strayed from their roots and forgotten the true sentiment behind the tradition. Immigrants have always been hated and reviled by those that got here earlier - but the current anti-immigrant sentiment is vastly different in scale and sophistry due to the times we live in. If every IV member signs up 10 citizens to the immigrant cause, we should easily be 100,000 strong in a couple of weeks. It could be anyone from your advisor at school who mentored you to your buddies at work - even the stinkin relatives should be harassed. Though CIS and Numbersusa pretend that they are a product of the current anti-illegal sentiment, they started out much before the so-called 'wave' started. And they have adapted and honed their strategies very well to crush whatever relief Congress contemplates/passes. Consider the way CIS was initially dedicated to 'researching' immigrant issues that they would complain about the media's positive stories about immigrant contributions as merely anecdotal evidence not worthy of rebuttal. Now they are suddenly fond of anecdotal evidence themselves since experts began demolishing their claims of job-stealing and other baseless charges convincingly(esp CFR's Sebastian Mallaby) using empirical evidence-they shamelessly stoop to use someone's sob story to make their case. So, as repugnant as their motives are, they are too transparent for their own good- and they can't cover their tracks -which is good for us since we are appealing to the fair minded. Remember - every one in the US is an immigrant or an offspring of one. They have always been hated and reviled -so if someone who benefited from the immigrant tradition of this nation wants to turn around and deny it to those following him/her even though their ancestors did the same thing at a great emotional/economic cost to the then existing natives- they have a higher bar in explaining why the current bunch shouldn't continue to benefit from the great tradition-merely being bigoted but sophisticated enough to hide it isn't enough. so don't lose heart but dont sit on your ass either.

There is a different visa category for australians called E1, only THOSE ppl's spouses can work. If an australian is on an H1 his wife cannot work on an H4 either.
In that case you also have to argue, why H4's cant work but L2's can? :)
The Australian visa is called E3, not E1. E3 is like a simplified H1B that can be renewed indefinitely and yes, dependents can work anywhere. The filing process is quick and inexpensive. There is a quota of 10,000 per year, not including dependents. Given that Australia only uses a few thousand H1's a year, this is a very attractive visa.
In the Australian press it was implied that the US govt passed the E3 visa as payback for Australia's support in the Iraq war. Originally it was supposed to be part of a free trade agreement.

I also do not understand why H4 are not eligible for work permit. I think when they passed H1b, they did not lobby for H4's to have work permit as they probably did when they introduced L1/L2 and E1/E2 visas. The onus is on us H1b holders to ask for H4's to have work permit. So I hope IV adds this to their list of goals if it is not already one. Lot of people understand that current H1b limit is not enough so this could be a good option if they are reluctant to increase the H1b cap.

Not many goodies this time..thats what all the analysts/experts seem to be predicting.
True, Unless congress enacts a law allowing the usage of unused visa and or increase in available number for LRP, else EB2 with later PD must explore EB1 to get ahead of the EB3's porting to EB2 with old PD :( .. Well, the point is, NO other options except increase in visa / re-use unused visa from past years can help every one here. Everything else, discussed / debated will be a waste of time ...

I was also told that there is new law which requires that the PERM fees should be paid by the employer (around 5-6k). Most desi consultancies used to ask the employees to pony up the labor fees. wonder how this will affect the conversion process.
It is ILLEGAL for the foreign applicant to pay for the PERM fees or the I-140 fees or lawyer expenses pertaining to either steps. The Employer MUST bear all expenses for this process. If you have evidence of wrongdoing, pls report it to DOL.
We should not be supportive of such violations of law - as a group it is not in our best interests.
The foreign applicant may pay all I-485 related expenses - or a generous employer can cover those expenses too.

Transforming members to contributors is good step but before that we have to work locally to convert "Guests to Members" or a IV "Ignorant to a Guest".Whenever i open IV i see more Guests than Members browsing ... :)
Remember 500,000 folks are stuck in EMP based backlogs - Out of that 23,000 are IV members, may be 30,000 would be anonymous guests , and rest 450,000 do NOT know about IV at all !!!
I mean to spread our movement more on a grass-root level we may need to increase awareness in a planned manner. May be TV Ads,newzpaper, Phone call immigrant house holds, Colored Flyer at Car Wiper - WHATEVER IT TAKES. Twist every ears , pull every hairs kind of thing.
If IV can arrange 150 lawmaker meet with 2500 active folks at DC think about how many meetings can be arranged if there are 25,000 active folks !!!! We dont have that many lawmakers ( 645 someone said )
I know talking is easy on a Friday night over drinks than working and that's what i'm doing right now :) but just thought of expressing my views.
Does any of this makes sense ?
We should focus on spreading awareness about IV. I can't believe I was totally unaware of IV's existence until a month back. I haven't done much but felt strongly about what IV's doing. Me and my wife attended the rally and even contributed for the first time ever. We should brainstorm on how we can get more people on board and on how to transform members into contributors.

I hope you understand that Bigtime's post was thickly laced with sarcasm.
I admire your courage to stand up and apologise. I wish you all the best, and I hope they lift the ban. You are the type of people we need. Be positive, there is a line for green cards and I didn't know people can jump the line. I need to concurrently file so I can get an EAD. I've been sitting at home for several years as a dependent. And after that I will stand in line with the rest for a green card. All the best and I hope to see you again. Pls don't make this your last posting

kaka,
You have so far been saying "nobody will get GC... it is a scam..."
Now that there is a chance someone will get GC with a new House, do you still go with your "win-win" stand?
Will you change your course too and say something new?
Kaka no offense meant here....just a joke.
In words of the President " He will stay the course"
Cheers

To everyone who thinks rallies dont make a difference, as described here : http://immigrationvoice.org/forum/showthread.php?t=13583
This is not an attack post. Or a criticizing post. This is purely educational and please keep this thread clean.
I know there are many out there who are snickering in their cubicles looking at the pictures of the rally and thinking "Look at these idiots, they think Congress will pass SKIL bill because they walked 1.2 miles with some placards and banners".
Such thinking is reasonable. But only if you dont know how things work.
Here is why rally of Sept 18th will be consequential:
1. When you do a rally, people notice. People recognize organization and measure its strength. It stays in their heads for a long time and they keep Immigration Voice as one of the organizations they can ask for support when they push for their own cause. In Congress, things work based on compromise, consensus and consultation. People dont just sponsor legislations they believe in. They run it thru their caucus and leadership and do a vote count. To find out how many votes would they get if they came up with this new idea. Whether it will get 218 votes in House. Whether they will get 51 votes in senate. If its filibuster proof and get 61 votes in Senate. Whether it has committee support. Whether leadership offices are in agreement to put it in schedule. All this happens in background and there are people who are hired in committees just to do vote counts on proposed ideas. IF it turns out they dont find enough support, they drop it. If they think they can pull it off, they approach leadership (Speaker in House, Maj leader in Senate) to put it in queue.
2. Let us say that Congressman X wants to sponser SKIL bill because of his constituency or a senator (like Feinstein) wants to sponsor AgJobs because food growers are having food rotten in absence of agricultural workers, a compelling cause. Now, when they want to pass legislation, they have to look for support and votes as described in item 1. When they fall short, they find ways to sweeten the pot. IF they see that a powerful organization will throw in their support and lobbying in favor of their bill if they attach a few of that organization's provisions, then they approach them. Immigration Voice did 138 lawmakers meetings (in House and Senate). They did the rally. They would consider IV as a organization that can help them PUSH for their legislation. Now we have a place at the negotiating table. If they attach our provisions (like recapture, or GC quota increase), then we can promise to do something for them. Like support the entire bill they are pushing for. They know that we can do rallies and we can do hundreds of lawmaker meetings. If Diane Feinstein (just an example) thinks that by adding skilled employment based reform provisions she can get IV's support and swing a few votes to help her pass her favorite AgJobs bill, then we have opportunity where the Senator would ask us what we want rather than us going and asking them to do things for us. One of IV members said that on the day of the rally, suddenly the office of her senator called her and scheduled and appointment to meet the same day at 4:00 PM. She had been trying to get the appointment but after they rally and Roll call newspaper ad (http://immigrationvoice.org/media/forums/iv/rollcal3a.pdf), they called her to listen to her. I heard about this from her just as the rally was over.
3. CIR has recently failed. From some meetings, I got the feeling that CIR's failure has left a bad taste in mouth and many people in Congress as well as administration are very upset about it still. Now that we have done this rally, done lawmaker meetings, put a rollcall ad, did the media blitz, press conference, congressional reception (where 4 congressmen attended and spoke in IV's support), they know that it would be a good idea to keep IV on their side and put some of their things in a bill. Next time they write a bill (behind closed doors very often), they will consult us and ask us if they can do something for IV to win IV's full support. That's because by getting IV's support on their side for whatever they are doing, they can be assured that we wont oppose it but instead support it. With phone calls, Rallies, paid ads, lawmaker meetings etc. If they are really investing in getting a bill passed, they would include our provisions just to increase the odds.
Strength respects strength. If we have the strength to do things and make a difference (rallies, meetings, receptions, press conferences, paid ads), then that strength begets more strenght because other powers want us to join hands with them so that they can do their favorite things (AgJobs, DREAM etc).
I thought the rally helps bring attention to our cause and put pressure. I never knew so many things go on behind the scenes.
I think by the time we get our green cards, we all will be experts in the nitty gritty of American Politics

Its a terrible tragedy when lives are lost. My heart goes out to the innocent victims and their family and friends.
Air France is conveniently blaming it on bad weather but I don't buy it...planes fly just fine in bad weather...at least well maintained planes. While their incompetency at customer service clearly shows, they are probably sub standard in maintenance and safety issues as well. Too bad innocent lives have to pay a price to bring that out.
Another reason not to fly Air France.

I agree with what you say. Yes, backlogged victims need some justice at this moment, otherwise there it is morally not good for everyone.
1. Why don't we petition first before thinking of Lawsuit. We from IV should write a letter to USCIS stating the injustice brought to the backlogged victims and how it is mentally affecting them etc. We should ask USCIS to consider these things and come up with a solution for backlogged victims instead of threatening DOS and others with Lawsuit. Since we are at their mercy, there is nothing wrong in keeping them higher up and at the same time getting what we want.
2. If the petition did not work out, then we can think about some suit. Still I don't agree with any suit as it is not going to bring justice. By the time the suit clears, you will have your GC in hand.

Now the USCIS had made july bulletin Current again, Everyone with an approved LC can apply. But after Aug 17th The Visa numbers will be unavailable again. USCIS is not going to approve many 485 in this one month period. There may be few lucky ones to get approval between july 17th and aug 17th.
But PD matters when the new fiscal year starts in october. If the dates are retrogressed to 2003 or 2004, USCIS will approve 485 that have PDs before the retogressed dates. Above all Backlog centers are committed to clear their backlogs before sep 30 2007. So there is still hope for those stuck in Backlog Centers that their PD is valuable when retrogression strikes.
Also expect huge delays in getting EADs and APs. IV should urge USCIS to issue interim EADs if EAD is not issued within 90 days.
